Abstract

Australians are engaged in a debate regarding their military forces and their possible regional role. The significance of this debate and its relationship to Australians' attitudes towards the outside world can be judged by examining its implications vis-à-vis the traditional position of this nation on the problems of its military and political security. Assuming that the examination will have to lead to a definition and that this would eventually be followed by a retraction of some existing commitments, where will Australians look for the opportunity to express a growing sense of independence? The three areas that challenge Australian policy are the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the Pacific area. The Pacific, in contrast to both the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia, is for Australia a source of inspiration and power.
